the Nokia E72 is pretty sweet hardware wise, but the OS, Symbian S60 3rd edition, turns it bitter in some spots which, fortunately, can be rectified by the dev team.

unless, of course, they're lazy or something.

Hardware and Software synergy

Compared to the other contenders in the market, the Symbian soul in the phone establishes a link to its' hardware counterparts like a rattly wooden bridge that hangs dangerously on ropes over a deep valley. In other words, it's inefficient in the synergy of both hardware and software.

The ROM (512MB) and processor (600MHz) of the E72 won't see it become shy when near a HTC Hero but it performs much less admirably than the boastfully-named machine, and I suspect that this isn't because of lesser RAM (the E72 has 128MB while the Hero owns 288MB) as I'm not delving into the topic of multitasking.

My experience with Symbian (not just the one in the E72) has made me label the OS as, oftentimes, having sufficient resources but being a lazy and inefficient worker.

Basically, Nokia's dev team has to pan out the software and hardware friction for optimizing the link between the digital and physical. For example, they could get rid of that small thumbnail preview look in the images gallery - it saps resources like a sucker, literally (it always gobbles up 100% of the available RAM when launched, as checked via the Energy Pro app).

User Interface polishing

Symbian is already showing its' age in the UI realm when compared to the fresh and frequent updates of other mainstream mobile OSes (eg. iPhone OS, soon on version 4; Android, upcoming 2.2 Froyo; Blackberry OS, already seen in the wild with the 6th update).

For starters, the dev team can raze that analogue clock on the top left of the standby screen to free up more screen estate for even more shortcuts, notifications etc. Nobody really reads that small numberless clock especially since there's a small digital clock at the bottom bar that is almost omnipresent throughout the whole phone.

Yes, I know that you can switch the bigger clock to a digital one but the main issue I see here is that if there's a need for 2 clocks on the same screen showing the same time, it's a design failure in both aesthetic and ergonomic terms.

Moreover, they could make the pop-up windows (eg. 'keypad locked') look curvier around the edges. Perfectly rectangular boxes with sharp and stark 90 degrees edges only look good on monitors, minus the bezel. But this is just an issue on eye-candy and shouldn't be a priority on the dev team's list of to-do's.

Internet

As a smartphone, internet user-friendliness is vital, WiFi-tapping should be a breeze, internet-browsing experience must be pleasant.

One minor but slightly irritating issue I found with the E72 is that it doesn't seem to be honest when it comes to searching for Wifi spots. Even if there aren't any WLAN access around, the WLAN scanner always says that there is and when serched for, it reveals it to be 'Hidden WLAN' which is actually nothing and doesn't allow internet access. I'm not sure whether this is a way to tether to another device or something, but I'm not going to experiment with that as I'm scared of 3G data charges after a certain incident.

Another issue with the internet experience on the E72 is that it doesn't allow the default browser to be switched. I love Opera Mini and I despise the Symbian browser due to the stark differences in user-friendliness, aesthetics and even capacity (before the first firmware update, the default browser always crashes when it enters big sites like Engadget, but Opera Mini doesn't). For some reason, certain WiFi spots (usually the ones that have a pre-usage promo page like that of McDonald's or Starbucks) doesn't connect with Opera Mini but does so with the Symbian browser.

Shutterbug bug

The E72's camera uses 5 Mega-pixels which takes fine to beautiful photos, provided you fiddle preemptively with the settings first. One of my peeves about the camera is that it doesn't save changed settings. If you tweak the settings to be in Macro/Close-up mode without flash, the camera will revert back to the default Automatic mode with flash on after you relaunch the camera.

Another issue is that, whether in silent mode or not, the E72 doesn't allow silent camera snapping, which is a major bane.

Oh, and it should adhere more strictly to the flash option - with flash turned off, it still releases a flash during focusing.

if Nokia could decapitate all these flaws of the E72

(or better yet, Symbian itself),

it would definitely win hearts.

there's no need for free GPS navigation and Symbian^3,

if the core issues aren't solved.

as the name suggests, Kick Ass kicks ass

it also kicks the ass of the 2 other movies I watched

a rather realistic (albeit gory, sadistic and bloody) approach to the idea of superheroes

*about how gory, sadistic and bloody: Hit Girl decimates lives and limbs of gangsters using a double-bladed spear while grinning as some happy nursery-rhyme-ish song plays in the background*

loved the warehouse scene where Big Daddy takes out dozens of henchmen with beautiful choreography and precision in a weapon-utilized fashion akin to Ip Man's "10 black belt TaeKwonDo solo"

Internet Proxy Man 2 :)

no, the movie isn't about a geek fighting spyware or something

compared to the first Ip Man, I feel that the sequel was a letdown but nonetheless worth watching

the fight scenes weren't as Adrenaline-satiating as the ones found in the first (refer to the epic one man show against 10 black belt TaeKwonDo masters) but were more heart-compelling (*highlight to reveal spoiler* the cultural bashing between Hung Chun and The Twister which found the Chinese master bite the dust and stimulating a hatred for injustice)

whether or not the director meant for it to be funny, the entire cinema couldn't stop laughing everytime the emcee speaks in Cantonese xD

oh, and because of Ip Man 2, more than half the things Wen Han says to me are related to either the emcee or The Twister :p

Fe Homosapien duos

similar to Ip Man 2, I strongly believe that Iron Man 2 is starkly dwarfed by the 1st movie

the organization of Iron Man 2 is just messed up

the insights to fresh tech concepts aren't much:

~ a portable hacking tool (already exists but does not utilize augmented reality as it does on Iron Man 2)

~ a touch interface table (google Microsoft and Sony)

~ some super potent compact missile thing called the Ex-Wife (*highlight for spoiler* which didn't even work)

~ more HUD and augmented reality-rich butler system that is based on AI (we've seen plenty of the HUD, plus The Simpsons has long featured an AI home)

there aren't any conversational tech and weapon ideas compared to the 1st movie

(eg. Jericho missile and that projectile launcher that aims necks)

the closest tech concept to that would be Whiplash's electrically-surging whips

the final fight with Ivan Vanko is just pure lame

(this isn't considered a spoiler as all Marvel films always have a showdown between the "good guy" and the "bad guy" on the poster)

Orientation Camp in words!

went for Orientation Camp and got leeched for the first time in my life :)

Found the activities which weren't held at the campsite to be the most awesome ones! eg. jungle night walk and stream trotting

Took the 2nd position just behind the guide during the jungle walk and the front during stream trotting (periodically overtaking the guide with some of my collegemates, but the dog's the fastest haha)

oh, and Ca Tou and David celebrated their birthdays in camp!

I came back with a love for monkey bars too. Thanks to Jia Shern :p

I haven't been Sparring lately coz I've been Sporing

played Spore on my cousin's laptop (his has sufficient graphics card RAM) before I went to Bali.

I ate up 6 hours to evolve from a single cell frolicking around in primordial ooze to a spaceship-piloting planet-sacker.

That's pretty fast, right?
I mean, considering humans required millions of years if not billions, just to reach the Civilization Stage :p

I enjoyed the earlier parts of the game and not as much towards the later.

the Cell Stage is very much similar to the mobile phone's version of Spore.

But is nonetheless an interesting play, and I've played hours on the mobile one before I could start PC Sporing :)

with the introduction of legs and land comes the Creature Stage which is, in my opinion, the funnest stage of all.

one stage to rule them all!

After 15 minutes into the Space Age, I went back to the this stage and played till my cousin went back to Singapore :p

It was extremely fun maxing out the creature's attributes till maximum complexity (mine being a pure carnivore that aces in both socializing and predation skills) and pitting them against or for other species :)

One thing I wished was that this stage lasted longer and gave more creative rewards for their awards instead of DNA (they did give, right? lol sorry, I'm writing this out of memory)

My scenario:

I successfully brought extinction to 30 (or was it 50?) species and maxed out the predation abilities and got awards

And it's also pretty darn depressing to see your creature and its' allies get PWNed by a NPC called Epic Antler Guy...

or to see it suddenly get eaten by a giant lake crocodile while flying over a lake...

one of the most rushed and fastest-ending stages of Spore - The Tribal Stage.

It felt like this stage and the Civilization Stage were created solely to allow transition to the Space Age.

And it felt boring as well,

due to the fact that the reigning tribe would be the one with stone axes and more tribe members,

and that all the other non-tribal creatures are fodder to the tribes and posing little to no threat (except that they sometimes steal food).

And it felt repetitive because of that.

similar to the Tribal Stage, the Civilization Stage is just a rushed stage to provide logic for the Space Age.

It's also quite boring in the sense that it becomes repetitive and easy (especially after you acquire aerial forces and pound enemy cities like cakewalk)

But this stage is relieved of its' sins due to it having the most hilarious cut scene I've seen in my gaming life, featuring the tribe members that are brainstorming ideas of advancement in the form of thought bubbles xD

Idea 1: Explosions!!! yeah whooooh

Idea 2: Tanks!!! yeeaahh whoohhh

Idea 3: Pie!!! yea- wha?

my cousin and I laughed for I-dunno-how-long ;p

Space Age

It has the longest and steepest learning curve and is just overly complexed.

Not beautifully complex but just messed up.

I fled from this stage just after 15 minutes and dived back into the Creature Stage :3

We arrived at night and had to brace through congested traffic in a Daihatsu (actually a Toyota Rush but in Bali it's under Daihatsu) to transmit from Denpasar across Kuta and to Ubud.

The driver is named Made (pronounced Ma-De), meaning second child; the first, Wayan; the third, Nyoman; the fourth, Ketut (really sound like the smallest :p); and the cycle restarts.

So, there are a lot of Mades in Bali :p

During the journey, we passed by plenty of signs with the words "Babi Guling".

Speaking of babis, even though Indonesia is a Muslim country, Bali is 90% Hindu.

After check-in (and on-the-house smoothies :D) at Alam Jiwa, we adjourned to dinner at Cafe Batan Waru.

Loved the pre-attack planning parts, quick pace and the swift flashbacks which kept me in constant thoughts, with a few moments of rest between these thought-inducing scenes for the mind to rest and to brace for the next one.

I think they've cut a few scenes for a PG-13 rating as there were a scene or two that appeared in the trailer but not in the actual movie.

hmm...

To me, Sherlock Holmes is one of the best movies of 2009 :)

With Watchmen, The Dark Knight, Changeling and Ip Man on par with it.

(Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen and Gamer are just awesome eye candy :p)

A movie watched for kicks xD

Zombieland is like pink hair.

It's gay.

But not in a homosexual way, more of a lame-yet-cool-at-the-same-time kind of way.

The lame part: the slow-mo intro scenes

The cool part: the rest

The story direction is as expected and was slightly similar to I Am Legend, where the post-apocalypse survivors search for a safe haven (or homes)

Enjoyed how they used place names instead of real names.
It's easier to remember during the movie as they're all very distinct names.
The lamest one would have to be 406, who's named after an apartment lot :3

Loved the rules theme as well!

By the way, I did not watch Twilight and was curious to see Edward Coolant(:p) 's sparkly skin, which I saw and was reminded of Swarovski crystals.

I'm supposed to be playing Spore right now, but my computer doesn't have the driver to read DVDs.

Must be thanks to the computer shop that reformatted the PC without reinstalling it last year.

I can't find the physical disc for the driver (it's been 3 years), and spent an hour scourging the internet for the driver (on both Sony's site and 3rd party) but to no avail (probably due to the product being too old).

grr...

But it seems that time wants to tie me down.

How long more can we Homo Sapiens call ourselves human?

We have trampled over our moral and ethics, the core that all of us with an education are taught about when we were young in a gamut of ways such as side winding fables and straightforward Moral Studies. These "We" include the very authors of the subject which they write hypocritically.

(correct me if below-higher-education schools overseas don't offer Moral Studies)

With rampant killing sprees, adulterated child abuse, internal acts and scandals that manifest ubiquitously in newspapers and the internet, one is prompted to think, "How human are we?"

In nearly all forms of media that attempts to describe a blood-lusting trigger-happy killer with a penchant for throats, the platitudinous phrase "Are you even human?" is often bombarded on these "machines", suggesting that these pariahs as a class of society who are not worthy of the title "human".

The majority of hoi polloi advocate hypocrisy.

So much so that the world is a messed-up ball of propagandas.

The minority who sticks to their morally-driven principles are the ones considered human. But in my opinion, these people should be stripped of the title "human" for they hold the lesser half of the pie of the term "human" that is shared with the majority. Thus, the ethically-fueled have less rights to the human name.

So, those deemed human are not human.

The human body is one intriguing object.

It can withstand training and adapt and build muscle tissues for resistance to unbelievable standards, yet at the same time so easily injured and fractured with even the slightest trip.

It can endure torrents of bullets while razering whole bunkers of soldiers, yet at the same time bite the dust from a single gunshot or sometimes even drag one or more bodies along.

It can channel hysterical strength into itself and flip tractors over along with bucket-loads of Adrenaline, yet tear a muscle or sprain a joint when lifting weights of meager masses.

It is a medium to channel extraordinary feats, yet as another to show futility.

It is a heirloom that inherits both genetic benefits and hereditary diseases.

Either way, we're martyrs to our bodies, fit or not, as we can be enslaved to a never-ending pilgrimage for physical perfection (till death do us apart) or be chained to unwanted ailments (till our souls leave our shells).

The human body is a physical paradox in synergy with itself.

Got myself a bunch of loot from the recent PC Fair :D

all of them being peripherals.

Wasn't expecting Alienware to have a booth there!

And that day was the first time I've seen a real live breathing (due to the cooling fan) Alienware.

the desktops are an inch or two larger than MacPros in terms of dimensions.
A.K.A. They're HUGE!

Finally fiddled around with the HTC Hero and its' Android 1.6 at the HTC booth :D
And it's awesome! Except for the camera, as Phonearena reviewed.
Well, at least it's rumoured that a new Hero will be released next year. Or is it confirmed? I don't know lol

The HTC sales assistant called the Hero's capacitive touchscreen "Can use finger one. Use 温度. Temperature."

When asked about the internal memory, she gave me the specs for the RAM instead.

And I found out about Maxis, Digi and Celcom's PC Fair Promoting strategy:
Employ 40 to 50 youngsters and make them pass flyers and shout their telco's names.

Went to the Machines Apple Store in KLCC as well.

I was standing at the iPod counter when an auntie and her (presumably) daughter came in.

lady: "这个是 iPod 还是 iPhone ah?" (pointing to the iPod Touch)
me: "iPod."
lady: "oh, 这样多少钱 ah?"
me: "erm... 我不是在这做工的."
lady:"oh ok haha sorry ah"
